Event Review - December 5, 2024
The "Talks on Educational and Agricultural Projects" event, held on December 5, 2024, brought together an outstanding group of educators, artists, farmers, engineers, and activists committed to sustainability, education, and community empowerment. This gathering explored how education and agriculture can be powerful tools to promote soil conservation and its impact on human life and nature.
Among the speakers, muralist Margarita Cáceres reflected on community murals painted with soil, highlighting how the landscape speaks to us through its unique chromatic palette. Meanwhile, Krystal Arroyo and Luis González presented urban garden initiatives such as the Huerto Semilla at the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus, and the Huerto Callejón Trujillo in Ponce, emphasizing community self-management as a learning tool.
Professor Patricio Sánchez Guzmán from the National Soil Museum of Mexico and Engineer Ricardo Siachoque from the Agustín Codazzi Geographic Institute in Colombia discussed the role of soil museums as educational spaces that strengthen the connection between communities and their natural resources.
Natalia Martínez, from the Residential Center for Educational Opportunities in Villalba, shared how she incorporates the educational guides from Arte-Suelo-Ser (ASUSER) into her courses. Dulce María del Río-Pineda and her team from Mujeres de Islas showcased their work in Culebra, training the community in compost creation for fertile soils.
From Chiapas, Mexico, Misael Vázquez and José Martín, along with students from the Dr. Belisario Domínguez Agricultural Preparatory School, shared their educational experiences in organic rice farming, emphasizing the integration of theory and practice in learning.
The event underscored the urgency of protecting soils and demonstrated how education and agriculture can collaborate for a sustainable future. The speakers agreed on the importance of engaging new generations in an educational and agricultural model that values and preserves natural resources.
