This virtual event featured four panelists: Carol Ramos-Gerena, a doctoral student at the University of Buffalo; Dr. Daniel A. Bair Gallegos from the Agricultural Extension Service, UPRM; Dr. David Sotomayor, Professor at the College of Agricultural Sciences, UPRM; and Salvador Coleman Tió, a farmer from Finca Caribe, located in Yabucoa, Puerto Rico.
This year, the forum’s main theme revolved around the FAO's motto: “Caring for Soils: Measure, Monitor, Manage.” The event was moderated by Zoelie Rivera and Carmen Gonzales Ramos from Arte-Suelo-Ser. After the opening remarks and introduction of the panelists, rounds of questions were posed, focusing on each panelist's area of expertise. Drawing from their experiences, the discussion explored the major challenges faced by both scientists and farmers in the study of soils. We delved into innovative tools currently used for soil research and their connection to the theme of our 2024 Congress. Additionally, we discussed public and private practices and policies that could be adopted in Puerto Rico for sustainable soil management.
This event was a memorable one, full of learning and idea exchanges that enriched all of us who attended. The panelists shared invaluable insights from their experiences and fostered a productive discussion on how each of us can contribute to caring for our soils.
