The Soils Museum of the Caribbean is a living project dedicated to the study, interaction and appreciation of soils with a comprehensive and holistic approach that encompasses the origins, development, management and use of soils, as well as their meaning and value in Caribbean art and culture.
Our mission is to foster a deeper connection between soils and human beings in contemporary life.
Our inspiration comes from direct experiences with the soils of our archipelago: Puerto Rico. From witnessing how the earth tenderly welcomes life, to witnessing the indomitable force of a soil that transforms into a wave as it slides, sweeping everything in its path.
Recognizing the opportunities created by digital technologies and that we are a hyperconnected society, we work on transdisciplinary explorations that nurture dialogues between artists, creators, scientists and the community to reconnect with the soil, nourishing the sense of belonging and geographicity.
The Museum pursues its mission by designing and making accessible educational resources, fostering community engagement, disseminating scientifc work, documenting, preserving, exhibiting and collecting works of art.
Knowing, feeling, and caring for our soils is of great importance. We mediate scientific content about soils to make it accessible to everyone, especially to those who do not study soil sciences. We recognize soils as our natural and cultural heritage, and thus hope that our project is a contribution to our digital cultural heritage.
The Soils Museum of the Caribbean was established in 2022 and has been designed as a virtual Museum to promote greater reach, both in the Caribbean, the United States, and internationally. In addition, we seek to provide greater opportunities for our artists, scientists, and professionals in and and in the Caribbean Diaspora, to gain international exposure. The Soils Museum of the Caribbean is a project of Arte-Suelo-Ser Inc., a certified 501(c)(3) non-profit organization established in Puerto Rico in 2020.
