US Virgin Islands
The Virgin Islands, comprising Saint Thomas, Saint John, and Saint Croix, contain six of the twelve global soil orders and 23 distinct soil series. Of these 23 series, only one is also found in Puerto Rico: the Jaucas series.
The Soil Heritage Project’s Ground Dove Route is the first of its kind in the Virgin Islands. Named for the Columbina passerina, a small dove found across the southern United States, the Antilles, and parts of Central and South America, the trail proves that small stature is no limit to exploration. We invite you to enjoy the islands by staying close to the ground, discovering the rich history and culture rooted in our soil.
